TIPS for Igniting Love for Other Languages
When I speak about teaching my kids about other languages I get really excited, and that is the major ingredient that you need to have excitement! I believe that in order to guide kids in any adventure you need to move their inner motivation. So if I am going to give some tips on what I had been doing so far with my kids towards their multilingualism is this. Everything must be inner-connected with what is really going to motivate them to learn, to hear, to be multilingual!
This is a list of things that I do to enchant their hearts about learning and talking to me in different languages:
1. Teach a culture not only a language. This is very important because you are giving the context on how awesome is to learn this new language. Celebrate different holidays around the world. Read books on it. Listen to music from those countries. Have a hobby that has to do with it and cook their food.
2. Encourage them from when they are babies. Talk to your kids in the focus language and point out how awesome is that certain great people talk in that language. Make it in a very casual way.
3. Surround yourselves with that culture If you can not go to the country that speaks that language, make an active effort to meet people that speak it (parent groups, clubs, museums). If at the end you don’t have to either, if you can afford cable, pay for the package that has those languages. I have the rule of mostly watch TV (when we do) in the target languages. My kids don’t say anything when we see Ampamon (Japanese) movies. We may not understand all but the fact that we are been exposed to it is valuable.
4. If you are fluid in the language, play easy games in it as a family! If kids are not interested, they will be, after seeing you so engage in a game.
5. Pick their curiosity Yes, this one is really important, because if you start something secretive that requires the skills in that language, believe me, your kids will want to know what is going on! Have a treasure hunt, geocaching, solve a mystery in the other language or just talk about a family secret!
6. Encourage the use of the language. Make friends, talk to family members, talk to you in that language. It is great that after all, they are the ones that are going to start picking and choosing to speak the language. When they do, praise them in a natural way. When you are around people, make the comments on how well your child speaks or understands certain language. Don’t embarrass them! Just make those tiny cute comments here and then. They do pay attention!
TIPS para Encender el Amor por Otros Idiomas
Cuando hablo acerca de enseñar a mis niños otros idiomas, no puedo hacer otra cosa que emocionarme, y este es el mayor ingrediente que necesitas para hacerlo, emocionate! Creo que para guiar a los niños en cualquier tipo de aventura necesitas mover su motivación interna. Así que si voy a dar algún consejo de lo que he hecho hasta el momento para ayudar a mis hijos a ser plurilingües es esto. Cada cosa debe estar interconectada con lo que realmente motiva a tus hijos para aprender, escuchar, a ser plurilingües!
Esta es una lista de las cosas que he hecho hasta el momento para encantar sus corazones sobre el aprendizaje y a hablarme diferentes idiomas:
1. Enseña una cultura y no solo un lenguaje. Esto es muy importante porque les darás un contexto de cuán maravilloso es aprender este nuevo lenguaje. Celebra diferentes festividades a traves del mundo. Leé libros sobre ello. Escucha música de esos países. Tengan un hobby que tenga que ver con ello y cocina sus platillos.
2. Estímulalos desde que son bebés. Hablales a tus hijos en ese idioma y haz un punto de reseñar todas las personas maravillosas que hablan ese idioma. Hazlo de una manera casual.
3. Rodeénse en esa cultura. Si no puedes ir a el país en el que se habla este idioma, haz un esfuerzo activo para conocer personas que lo hagan (grupo de padres, clubs, museos). Si al final no tienes ninguno, y puedes pagar el servicio de cable, suscríbete al paquete en ese idioma. Yo tengo la regla de que en mi casa cuando vemos televisión debe ser en esos idiomas. Mis hijos no dicen nada cuando vemos las peliculas de Ampamón (Japonés). Si bien no entendemos todo, el hecho de que lo estamos escuchando es invaluable.
4. Si hablas el idioma con fluidez, juega con ellos como familia. Si los chicos no estan interesados, lo estarán después de verte tan animado jugando.
5. Pica su curiosidad. Si!!! esta es muy importante, porque si vas a empezar a hacer algo secreto y misterioso que requiere que tengan habilidades en ese idioma, creéme, tus hijos querrán saber que esta pasando! Haz una busqueda del tesoro, geocatching, resuelve un misterio en otro idioma o solo habla sobre un secreto de familia!
6. Anima a tus hijos a usar el idioma. Haz nuevos amigos, habla con la familia, haz que te hablen en ese idioma. Después de todo, es genial saber que ellos son los que escogen el idioma y empiezan a hablarlo. Cuando lo hagan, alabales de una manera natural. Cuando estes cerca de las personas, haz comentarios de como tu hijo habla o entiende cierto idioma. No los vayas a hacer sentir apenados! Solo haz pequeños y tiernos comentarios de vez en cuando. Ellos pondrán atención!
